

Dr. Schlegel was born on October 9th, 1946 to Herman and Gertrude Schlegel of Fleetwood, PA.
He completed his Bachelor of Science degree from Lincoln Memorial University on June 4th, 1967. His Master of Education degree soon followed from Temple University on August 25th, 1969. Richard earned his Doctorate Degree in Education from Temple University on May 24th, 1990. He loved being a teacher. Teaching science to high school, middle school, and elementary school students throughout his 40-year career; 35 years as a part of the Reading School District in Reading, PA, and 5 years at Pembroke Pines in South Florida. Early in his career, he taught science and social studies to K-8 students at the Reading Museum & Art Gallery as the School-Museum Science Improvement Coordinator.
Richard enjoyed traveling in his RV to Mexico, Canada, and throughout the United States. He was a member of FMCA, Safari International, Safari Southeast and a lifetime member of Beaver Ambassador Club and Good Sam. Richard appreciated other cultures and treasured the freedom and ability to travel as a US Citizen, not taking for granted the ability to access clean and safe food, water, and medical care.
Richard is survived by his wife, Linda Joy Tapp-Schlegel, his sons; Christopher Schlegel and Justin Schlegel, daughter, Jacqueline Tapp, and 7 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 8th, 2020, at 1:30pm at Hardage-Giddens Chapel Hills Funeral and Cemetery.
