It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Cruz Baez, Sr., a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, who departed this world on September 16, 2025, in Jacksonville, Florida, at the age of 103. Born on November 21, 1921, in Caguas, Puerto Rico, Robert lived a life filled with adventure, service, and love, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who knew him.
Robert was the son of Francisco Baez and Maria Cruz, who instilled in him values of hard work, resilience, and integrity from a young age. His journey through life included a significant chapter in the United States Navy, where he enlisted on December 29, 1941, and dedicated nearly three decades of his life to serving his country. Robert retired as a senior chief on January 15, 1969, having been a proud member of various Navy submarine organizations. His military service was a source of immense pride for him, and he shared his experiences with his family, ensuring that the values of dedication and honor were passed down through generations.
Robert wed the love of his life, Amparo Cebollero, in Manhattan, New York, on March 12, 1948. Amparo's passing on December 17, 2007, marked the end of their marriage, a testament to their deep love and partnership. They raised a beautiful family together, with Robert deeply committed to being a present and supportive father.
Amparo, his beloved wife, and their daughter, Mary Ann Baez, preceded Robert in death. He is survived by his son, Robert E. Baez, Jr., and his daughter-in-law, Karen Middleton Baez. He took great joy in being a grandfather to Kathryn Toback and Elizabeth Baez-Beatey, and he was immensely proud of his great-grandchildren, Victoria Klassy, Alexis Klassy, and Kristopher Beatey. Each of them held a special place in his heart.
In addition to his family, Robert was known for his unique personality—salty with a sweet side. He had a passion for gardening and home improvements, which reflected his nurturing spirit. A devoted fan of the New York Yankees and New York Giants, he enjoyed spending time watching games and celebrating victories with family and friends.
Despite having limited education, Robert's wisdom and life experiences were invaluable to those around him. Those who had the privilege of hearing his stories, filled with humor and heartfelt lessons, will miss him. Robert's kindness and unwavering support touched many lives, earning him respect and affection from those who knew him.
As we bid farewell to Robert Cruz Baez, we take comfort in knowing that his spirit will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. He will be remembered for his love, strength, and the indelible impact he had on everyone fortunate enough to cross his path.
