After 20 years of service Bob retired as a highly decorated Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force. Holding a Master’s of Science, and Doctorate of Education Bob's scholarly career ranged from Duval County school teacher, to principal, to college professor.
While being an avid lover of all animals, his bond with every dog he met was undeniable. Bob enjoyed his time as an umpire, football enthusiast, dad, grandfather, and husband. He always kept those he loved laughing with stories of his past; namely his time in the amateur boxing circuit, known as Rocky. If he wasn't fishing or catching up on westerns, you could find him practicing his Chess Master skills with his chess partner, Richard.
He is survived by his wife Mary Birmingham, daughters Patty Byrd Coleman (Jim), Toni Metzger, and son Robert Birmingham Jr. (Fe). Grandchildren James Kline, Jonnica Mcewen (Matt), Jordan Byrd, and Julianne Pedrablanca. Great-grandchildren Chloe, Ryan, Andrew, Liam, and June.
Bob was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great- grandfather. His lifetime of service to his country, his community, and all of those he loved lives as a lasting inspiration.
A graveside service for Robert will be held Friday, September 1, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM at Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Road, Jacksonville, FL 32218.
