GROBLE, Robert – Funeral services with military honors for Robert Edward Groble, M.D. will begin at 2 p.m., Sept. 25 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 4129 Oxford Ave., Jacksonville with the Rev. Thomas Murray officiating. Dr. Groble, a noted Jacksonville psychiatrist for four decades, died Aug. 24 from cardiac arrest.
He was born Sept. 22, 1943, in Chicago to Lawrence and Betty Koch Groble. After graduation (Phi Beta Kappa) from the University of Illinois, Bob earned his medical degree from the Washington University College of Medicine in St. Louis, then completed a pediatrics internship at the University of Wisconsin followed by three years of study at the Menninger School of Psychiatry in Topeka, Kan., and residency at Topeka State Hospital. After serving as chief of psychiatry at Irwin Army Hospital, Ft. Riley, Kan., Major Groble left the service and found his way to Jacksonville where he served on the medical staffs of Riverside Hospital, St. Vincent’s Medical Center, Orange Park Medical Center, and Flagler Hospital and was a member of the Duval County Emergency Preparedness Team. After three years with the McCullagh Group and five with Psychiatric Associates, he opened his private practice in 1983 and retired in 2018.
“Dr. Bob” was a distinguished life member of the American Psychiatry Association, member of the communicant of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church where he served many years as a choir member and chalice administrator, and active volunteer with Boy Scout Troops 252 and 26, Indian Guides and Journey into Wholeness. With Martye, his wife of 48 years, he traveled extensively, including mission trips to Cuba, the Bahamas, and Sierra Leone, and multi denomination post Katrina recovery. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and working in stained glass.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Lawrence and Donald. He is survived by Martye, daughter Ginger and sons Loren and Kristopher. The family suggests donations in Dr. Bob’s memory be made to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church or Cochranton Area Public Library, Cochranton, PA 16314.
