Shelby Lawrence Stevenson

Shelby attended and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville and Georgia Tech in Atlanta. He spent much of his career working as an electrical engineer with the railroad, namely CSX. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a public projects manager, overseeing a variety of rail projects and safety improvements across the greater Southeast. Outside of work, Shelby was deeply involved with his family, traveling around the country with them. He was an avid golfer as well, continuing to play until he was physically unable. Shelby also enjoyed gardening and cooking, as well as working with Murray Hill United Methodist to serve his local community. Shelby remained a life-long Georgia Tech fan, and engaged constantly with sports ranging from football to golf.

Shelby is survived by his wife, Janice Covert; stepson, Robert Covert (Hannah); daughter, Sarah Broughton (Web); three grandchildren, Taylor, Little Web, and Ellie; children Betsy, Ben, and Matthew; and sisters Carroll and Christie Stevenson.

The family would like to express deep gratitude to the wonderful staff at Ortega Gardens Memory Care for their compassion, support, and excellent care.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Murray Hill United Methodist Church, with Rev. Dr. Silas M’Mworia officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida or to Murray Hill United Methodist Church.
