

Sherman was a graduate of Crown Point High School, where he enjoyed being on the 1956 Championship Basketball Team.
He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1960 and served proudly for 26 years including his service in Vietnam. After retiring from service as Chief Petty Officer, he continued working as an aircraft mechanic for Northrop Grumman and also for NADEP Jax.
He married the love of his life, Phyllis Helen Duprey and remained her loving, devoted husband for the rest of his life.
He enjoyed his lighter collection from around the world, tinkering and fixing things, making up songs on the spot and spoiling his Grandchildren and Great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Phyllis Helen Thatcher; his sister, Anna Wallace and her husband Sonny; his daughters, Suzette Fleming and Dena Roberts and their husbands Dave Fleming and Burt Roberts; grandchildren, Amber Christine Woodward and husband Brian, Megan Elizabeth Corder and husband Chad, Tiffany Marie Minshew and husband Travis, Elena Mae Maysonet, Sean Miguel Maysonet, Samantha Lynn King, Chad Douglas Roberts and Della Nicole Roberts. Sherman was also a proud “Great Grampy” 9 times.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Alice Thatcher; son, Jeffery Allen Thatcher; brothers, John Taylor and Edwin Taylor; sisters, Bernice Marcotte, Joyce LaFave, Bessie Griffin and Hilda Woods.
A memorial service for Sherman will be held Saturday, December 9, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Hardage-Giddens, Riverside Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32205.
