Born September 25, 1948 in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Clyde Gertrude and Frank Raymond McDonough. In 1968, he joined the United States Navy and served onboard the USS Constellation and USS Bonnehom Richard as a Machinist Mate. After 4 years of honorable service during the Vietnam War, he transitioned to become a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Steamfitter. He was a member of the union Local 602 for several decades. One of his most notable accomplishments was aiding in the repair of the Pentagon after the September 11th attacks. In 2017, the long-time resident of Kensington, Maryland retired to Florida to be closer to his family.
He is survived by two children, his son Ryan McDonough and wife Kristin, and daughter Shannon McDonough, as well as 2 grandchildren, Evie and Elle McDonough, and 2 nephews, Emmett and Michael Bladen. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Patsy and Pamela.
His most prized possession was his family, as he moved from his home in Kensington to be with them in Jacksonville. His children’s military service (Ryan, currently serving over 19 years in the United States Navy, and Shannon, 6 years of service in the United States Army) was an extreme source of pride. His last years were spent cherishing time with his children, granddaughters, and extended family. His storytelling, humor, and hardheadedness will be sorely missed.
A service at Arlington National Cemetery on March 9th, 2021 at 1pm.
