Alvaro Martin “Marty” Chapman, age 65, of Commerce Township, passed away surrounded by his loving family on August 31, 2025 after a long, courageous battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Marty was born in Canton, Ohio on November 3, 1959, to Irwin and Judith Chapman.
Marty was known for living life to the fullest. As a retired Captain in the Army, he enjoyed life's little routines and pushing himself physically and mentally. As a software engineer, he enjoyed focusing on the details and digging deeper into the data. As a father, Marty liked spending time with his children. From chopping down Christmas trees to baking homemade cookies, he always enjoyed participating in fun family activities.
As a husband, Marty enjoyed sending flowers to his wife, holding her hand, and sitting as close to her as possible at all times. As an uncle, he enjoyed talking to the “young and shiny” members of the family as he liked to call them. As a brother Marty enjoyed fun family get togethers and spontaneously calling to catch up with a phone call. As a son he enjoyed long distance chats and could feel the love across the miles. As an amateur photographer, Marty enjoyed capturing the precious moments of life. As a lover of the TV show Blue Bloods (Tom Selleck) and the movie It’s a Wonderful Life (Jimmy Stewart), he enjoyed the loving ways of strong yet gentle men. As a lover of dogs, Marty enjoyed sharing his blankets and cuddling with his puppies. As a lover of learning (Neil deGrasse Tyson), he was fascinated by knowledge.
Marty knew how to do a lot of things and was always willing to share his advice on how to help. From a broken printer to a broken ice maker, he was a guy that used YouTube videos to find out how to fix many items. He always had several computers at a time, and each one had a special function. As a lover of woodworking, Marty built many strong and sturdy shelves in his house. As a lover of country music, he could often be heard loudly singing along with his favorite country songs, knowing only a few of the words in each chorus, but making sure to sing those words with great gusto. As a lover of his family, Marty’s voice still echoes in the rooms of our home as he gives us his fatherly advice. He will always hold a special place in our hearts.
Marty is survived by his wife of 31 years, Bonnie Lin Chapman, and his two children, Nathan Alvaro Chapman and Meghan Lin Chapman. He is also survived by his father, Irwin (Corrine) Chapman, sister, Cheryl (David) Braxton, and three brothers, Irwin Chapman, Edward Chapman, and Anthony (Dorothy) Briley, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family, whom he loved dearly.
Marty is preceded in death by his mother, Judith Chapman, step mother, Charlene Chapman, and sister, Antoinette Chapman McCoy.
A private family Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.
To honor Marty’s memory, his family wishes for people that are able and willing to donate blood and/or platelets to the American Red Cross.
