Ellen Love Sweet
November 25, 1929 – December 20, 2020
Our Mother, Ellen Love Sweet (Smith), went to be with the Lord Jesus, Sunday, December 20, 2020. She left behind her children: Robert, Kevin, Mary Ellen, and Suzanne; her son in laws, Ken and Stevan and her beloved grandchildren, John, Ashley, James, Peter, Elizabeth, Andrew, Erin, and Ryan and great grandson, Liam.
Mimi, as the grandchildren called her, was the quintessential Southern lady who liked to read, write thank you notes and socialize. She grew up in Virginia Beach where her father was mayor and where she met the love of her life, Allen Sweet, our father. The dashing navy pilot swept her off her feet and brought her to live up in Michigan where we heard about regularly. We all have treasured memories of Virginia Beach as we gathered with cousins during Thanksgiving, spent summers on the beach and were introduced to oysters at age 2. In Michigan, we have joyful memories of swimming at the lake where Mimi didn’t want us to “splash her hair,” because “getting her hair done,” was a great priority. Mimi and Granddaddy loved to travel and took all four of us with them to many fun places.
We will miss Mimi’s Christmas Dinners at the club, family dinners at her pool as she sat in her big straw hat, her peanut butter pie, her spaghetti, her Southern drawl, her etiquette lessons, her stories of an old fashioned childhood, going out to lunch and shopping, going to the barn, her eye for beauty, her classy style and taste, her raving of the grand children, and most of all we will miss hearing her say, “I love you.”
