Mary C. Bonner Newcomb

Mary C. Newcomb, age 78 of Sylvan Lake, passed away Wednesday, October 27, 2010. Beloved wife of the late John; loving Mother of Mary, John (Susan), Neil (Edie) and Michael (Christine) Newcomb; proud Grandmother of 11; Sister of Katie (the late Charles) Wagner and James (Rosalie) Bonner. Mary was retired from POH as a RN. The funeral mass will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday, October 30, 2010 at Our Lady of Refuge Church, 3750 Commerce Rd. Orchard Lake. Visitation will be on Friday from 2-4 p.m. & 6-8 p.m. with a rosary service at 7p.m.at the Pixley Funeral Home Godhardt-Tomlinson Chapel, 2904 Orchard Lake Rd., Keego Harbor. Mrs. Newcomb will lie in state at the church on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be in Pine Lake Cemetery. In honor of Mary’s love for reading, memorial donations may be made to the West Bloomfield Library.

Letter to Mary May 14, 1979.

Dear Mrs. Newcomb,

I want to express my sincere appreciation for everything you and your staff did for my father Nelson Bell, in the weeks before and at the time of his death. All of the nurses and aides who attended him were both efficient and considerate. I am sure my father likes being at Oakland Medical Care and I am pleased that he was able to spend his last weeks in the presence of warm and caring people. I am greatful also for the kindness shown by everyone to my mother and me which helped greatly in a difficult and uncertain time.

Illness and death are events to which few people seem to give much thought until they are confronted with them; it needs to be a person of strength and humor to meet these facts of life on a daily basis. It is comforting to know that in the middle of a somewhat mechanistic environment there is a professional center in which live the human values of sympathy and caring.
