Born on April 18, 1946, in Hamtramck, Michigan, Doc lived a remarkable life marked by intellectual curiosity, professional excellence, unwavering honesty, and a deep devotion to his family and friends. A respected physician for many decades, he dedicated his career to caring for countless patients whose lives he touched through his skill, compassion, and commitment to medicine. In addition to earning his medical degree from Midwestern University in Chicago, IL, in 1972, he also obtained a law degree from Detroit College of Law, reflecting his lifelong pursuit of knowledge and extraordinary intellect.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bob was known among family and friends as an exceptionally talented investor. He generously shared his knowledge and guidance with many loved ones, helping family members and friends navigate their financial decisions. Whether discussing the stock market, medicine, history, current events, or nearly any other topic imaginable, he always seemed informed and eager to engage in thoughtful conversation and spirited debate. His quick wit, sharp mind, and straightforward nature were legendary among those who knew him. He never hesitated to say exactly what he thought, and people respected him for it. His work ethic was unmatched. Whether caring for patients, supporting his family, managing investments, or tending to his home, he gave his full effort to everything he did. The lessons he taught about perseverance, accountability, and dedication will continue to live on through his children and the many lives he influenced.
Above all, he was a loving husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, and loyal friend. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Janet Ciemiega; his children, Michael Ciemiega (Kate Foster) and Amy Francis (Dr. Todd Francis); his sister, Margaret Suma (Brian Suma); and his treasured grandchildren, Carter Francis (16) and Claire Francis (13).
Although he practiced medicine until his hospitalization, he also found great joy in life's simple pleasures. He loved cooking for family and friends, spending time on his boat, maintaining and caring for his property, and sharing laughter and conversation with those he loved. Whether he was playing Pictionary with his grandchildren during the holidays or sitting by the lake watching his grandson hook ‘a big one’, he truly cherished his time spent with his family. There was hardly a waitress, friend, or stranger within earshot who didn’t hear about, or see pictures of, his beloved grandchildren and their accomplishments.
He will be deeply missed by his family, many former and current patients, countless friends, and the many friends who became family over the years. His wisdom, humor, generosity, and larger-than-life presence leave an irreplaceable void in the hearts of all who knew him.
The family has chosen to honor his life with a private family gathering.
Though he is no longer with us, the memories he created, the lives he touched, and the love he shared will remain with us always.
