I’m not sure if anyone knows this story, or even if Momo ever realized the ripple effect she set into motion.

Just before I deployed in 2013, she gave me my very first rosary. It didn’t matter to her what religion I was or whether I was even a believer. She simply wanted me to have something that represented love, protection, and that someone back home was praying for me.

I wore that rosary throughout my entire deployment. When I returned home, it hung from the rearview mirror of my car as a constant reminder of her love and Gods protection.

A few months later, a close friend who had deployed with me was involved in a devastating motorcycle accident. He was in a coma, and we were told to prepare ourselves because the odds were not in his favor. One evening, as family and friends quietly rotated through his hospital room, I felt compelled to do something I had never done before. I wrapped Momo’s rosary around his hand and prayed over him. As I walked out of the room, I left it with him because, in that moment, I believed he needed God’s love and protection more than I did.

Against all expectations, he survived. Not only did he recover, but he went on to build a beautiful life. Today he is a devoted husband, a loving father, and a law enforcement officer who continues to serve others.

I’ll never know exactly how God worked in that moment, but I do know this: one simple act of kindness from Momo continued far beyond the day she handed me that rosary. Her love reached into my life, into my friend’s life, and in many ways into the lives of everyone he or I have loved or served since.

That is the kind of legacy she leaves behind. One small act of love can create a ripple that reaches farther than we could ever imagine.
