A celebration of life service for Dr. Billie Johnson Laney of Killeen will be at 10:00 am Tuesday at First Methodist Church of Killeen. A family and friends gathering will follow at the church. Dr. Laney died July 27 in Belton after a long and dignified fight against cancer which she handled with grace as she did all things.
Billie Byrd Johnson was born October 17, 1937 in Dallas, TX to T.M. and Rubye (Byrd) Johnson. She spent her childhood in East Texas which always held a very special place in her heart. Billie graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1958 and after graduation she taught 5th grade in Dallas. It was there she met the love of her life, Stan Laney. They were married November 19, 1960. Billie and Stan continued their education at East Texas State University both earning a Ph.D. In 1970 Billie joined the faculty at Central Texas College, where she touched so many lives and enriched the education of others for over 40 years, earning the title of Professor Emeritus in 2000. She loved her profession and thrived on the accomplishments and achievements of her students. Nothing pleased her more than knowing that a former student was happy and successful in their life endeavors, both professional and personal. She truly loved learning and was wonderful at instilling that love in others.
Family and friends were so special to Billie. She loved people dearly and never missed a chance to send a birthday card or a note to recognize an accomplishment. She lived her life with flair and marked every encounter with kindness.
Billie loved fashion! She was always dressed perfectly for every occasion and was known for her signature hats. When she walked in a room she had a presence like no other.
Always gracious and so kind, she was continuously concerned about others. Even as her illness progressed she always asked her friends and family about their loved ones and kept up with their day to day activities.
Dr. Laney was preceded in death by her parents, T.M. (Tobe) and Rubye Johnson, and her husband Dr. Stan Laney. Survivors include her daughter Johnsa Dow and husband Ricky of Salado. Step grandchildren Shea Dow and Ryanne Dow. Jenny Flugum, whom she lovingly and fondly called her “other daughter” and adopted grandchildren Jarrod Weaver and Abigale Flugum.
The family would like to especially thank Dr. Catherine McNeal, Billie’s physician and close friend, for her excellent care and concern that went above and beyond anyone’s expectations.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dr. Stan Laney and Dr. Billie Laney Scholarship Fund at Central Texas College.
