He was born at Station Hospital, Fort Jackson, South Carolina on April, 22, 1948. He joined the U.S. Army on June 17, 1965 and retired Honorably on June 30, 1986. During that time, he served three tours in the Vietnam War (1967-1968, 1969-1969, and 1971-1972). He also spent time in Okinawa, Japan (1965-1966) and Korea (1976-1977). He earned numerous awards to include; Purple Heart with 2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters and Bronze Star with 4 V (Valor) devices, and the coveted Ranger Tab. He retired with the rank of Sergeant First Class as a Military Policeman at Ft. Hood, Texas.
After retirement from the U.S. Army, be became a Police Officer for several cities in Texas; Harker Heights ((December 17, 1986 - June 5, 1992); Rockdale, Texas (June 15, 1992 - April 12, 1992); Milam Co. Const. PCT. (June 28, 1996 - September 10, 1996), and Thorndale Police Department (September 11, 1996 - December 4, 2003) where he retired as Chief of Police. He served a total of 15 years and 9 months as a Police Officer.
He loved the Texas Rangers Baseball Team. He also enjoyed spending time fishing and hunting. His favorite color was blue and his favorite song was performed by the Righteous Brothers, "Soul and Inspiration." He also loved his coffee, mexican food, spicy chili and mango margaritas.
His proudest moment was being with his father in March 1969 in Vietnam and celebrating the birth of his son, David.
His proudest career accomplishments were retiring from the U.S. Army and retiring from the Police career field as Chief of Police.
His Civic Accomplishments included working with animals. He obtained a Criminal Justice Degree from Central Texas College and was a part of the graduating class of 1985.
Left to cherish Cecil's memories are his Son, David Hamm and his Wife, Casey Hamm; Son, Charles Hamm; Grandchildren, Lewis Hamm, Gage Hamm, Gavin Hamm, and Lily Hamm which he was very proud of all his grandchildren and loved them very much; Great Grandchildren, Keanu and Cassius. Lewis and Gavin are currently following in their grandfather footsteps; Lewis as an Infantryman In the U.S. Army and Gavin as a Ranger in the U.S. Army.
Preceding him in death were his Mother and Father, Elizabeth Marie Keaton and Cecil Robert Hamm, Sr.; Wife, Elizabeth Ann (Goodhue) Hamm, and Siblings, Mary Minnick and Herman Minnick,
A Visitation for Cecil will be held Saturday, December 2, 2023 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home. A Service will occur Monday, December 4, 2023 at 1:00 PM followed by a Committal Service with Full Military Honors at 3:00 PM at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery.
