

General Jones was born in Hudgens, KY. His family moved to a farm in Bengal, KY when he was 2 years old where his father was a tobacco farmer and his mother was a school teacher. Don was the youngest of 5 children and attended a one room school until eighth grade. He then had to ride the bus for an hour to the county high school before attending college for 1.5 years prior to joining the military.
He married the former Betty Karnes in July 1956. They had one daughter, Lori, born at Fort Hood, and one son, Donald II, born in Fort Leavenworth, KS. He was later the proud granddaddy of Shelbie and Michael.
General Jones was a Field Artillery Officer, and his favorite assignments were in military manpower and personnel policy. He loved connecting with the soldiers. After serving over 34 years, he retired as a Lieutenant General in July 1991.
After retirement from the Army he was a Senior Vice President at the American Red Cross in charge of Disaster Services for Elizabeth Dole.
After his retirement from the Red Cross, he volunteered in the local Red Cross Chapter, worked with Scott & White Hospital to raise money to help soldiers returning from Iraq with PTSD and volunteered in the Killeen community with the homeless shelter and any other places he was needed.
Don and Betty are members of First Baptist Church, Killeen. Don made a profession of faith at 5 years old, and was ordained as a deacon at 25. He loved our church family.
A private burial was held at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, TX.
