Dorothy (Whitis) Ashworth

Dorothy (Whitis) Ashworth, 88, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2018 in Temple, Texas. She was born November 10, 1929 to Len and Edna (Faucett) Whitis in Killeen. She graduated high school in Gatesville. She met her husband, Jim Ashworth, while he was stationed at Camp Hood and they were married there in April, 1949. They lived in Killeen and Salado after Jim retired from the military.

Dot was a long-time member of First Baptist church in Killeen and later, First Baptist Church, Salado. She was an active member of the Killeen Garden Club, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas organization, and of local line dancing clubs. She and Jim enjoyed traveling in Europe while he was stationed in Germany. They both loved playing cards, dominos, and spending time on the golf course with their friends and family. Dot was well-known for her stylish appearance and flair for fashion.

Dorothy (Dot) was preceded in death by her husband Jim Ashworth, brothers Weldon Whitis, Sherwood Whitis and her sister, Bobbie Pingaro. She is survived by her daughters, Sheree Hunter (Roger) and Brenda Ray (Kenneth), four grandchildren, Jennifer Larson, Julie Allison, Laurelyn Arterbury, and Tate Hunter, eight great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Dot’s life will be held on Tuesday evening, March 13, 6-8 PM at the Brick and Barrel event center in Killeen. A gravesite service will follow on Wednesday, March 14, at the Central Texas Veterans Cemetery, at 1:00 pm, where she will be buried next to her husband.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, or to a charity of choice.
