

Services for Gladys Faye White Swindle, 73, of Killeen, will be Monday, February 16th at 2 pm at Memorial Baptist Church in Killeen. Visitation will be from 6-8 pm Sunday, February 15th at Crawford and Bowers Funeral Home. Mrs. Swindle’s trust in Jesus Christ as Savior assured her of her eternal home in Heaven. She went to her new home on Thursday, February 12th.
Mrs. Swindle was born April 20, 1941 to J.T. (Pete) and Fay Dell (Buse) White in Santa Anna, Texas. She grew up in Bangs, Texas.
Gladys is survived by her husband of 50 years, Ed; three brothers and their wives, Larry and Joy White of Keller, Jimmy and Sharon White of Killeen and Clinton and Carolyn White of Big Lake; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by both of her parents.
Mrs. Swindle graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from Howard Payne University and with a Master of Education Degree from Texas A&M University.
Mrs. Swindle poured her life into the children and educators in the Killeen Independent School District for 39 years. She began her teaching career at Rancier Junior High School in 1963. It was at Rancier Junior High School that Miss White met Mr. Swindle. She moved on to teach English at Killeen High School. She transitioned from the classroom to become the assistant principal at Meadows Elementary School. She later became the principal at West Ward Elementary School and then, Harker Heights Elementary School, where she retired from in 2002.
After retirement, Mrs. Swindle continued to impact future educators by serving in the Tarleton Model for Accelerated Teacher Education (TMATE) with Tarleton State University.
She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church in Killeen since 1966. She served in numerous capacities over the years, to include teaching singles’ and women’s Sunday School classes and serving on the board of Memorial Christian Academy.
Mrs. Swindle’s community involvement speaks loudly about how much she cared for those around her. Over the years, she not only served as a member of different organizations, but held a variety of leadership positions within those organizations. Some of those are: Howard Payne University Alumni Association, Killeen Schools Retirees Association, Greater Central Texas Federal Credit Union Supervisory Committee, Killeen ISD Education Foundation, Kiwanis of Harker Heights, Texas Retired Teacher Association, and Modern Study Club.
Her honors include: Administrator of the Year for Large Districts from the Texas Classroom Teachers Association in 1988; Medal of Service recipient from Howard Payne University in 2001; and Dean’s Roundtable recipient from the College of Education from Texas A&M University in 2002.
