
Jerry Kenneth Bowers, age 59, died at a local hospital on Friday, May 18, 2012. A visitation has been scheduled from 10:00 to 11:30 am, Thursday, July 19, at Crawford Bowers Funeral Home of Killeen followed by a graveside service at 12:00 pm at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery.
Mr. Bowers was born June 7, 1952, in Camden, Delaware, County of Kent, to the late Charles and Pearl Bowers. He attended Star Hill Elementary School and graduated from Caesar Rodney Senior High School in 1972. Jerry attended the University of Delaware for over one year and then joined the Army. He retired after 20 years of service at the rank of Sergeant First Class. After retiring in Killeen, he began working at First National Bank and had just less than one year before he would have retired to enjoy his love of fishing every day. Jerry attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in Killeen, Texas, was a member of Moose Lodge #2179 in Harker Heights, and was a member of the Longhorn Council of Boy Scouts. He has held many positions in Boy Scout Troop 261 and for the last 10 years of his 15 year association with the Scouts, he served as Scoutmaster. In 2010 he was recognized as Scoutmaster of the Year by the Longhorn Council and by the Leon Valley District. One of his greatest passions was the annual Food for Families drive.
Survivors include three sisters, Frances Oliver, of Mississippi, Caroline Bowers, of Delaware, and Sheila Bowers, of Pennsylvania; four brothers, Charles, of Delaware, Irvin, of Delaware, Carlton, of Pennsylvania, and Curtis, of Delaware; an aunt, Patsy Coleman, of Delaware; two uncles, James Coleman, of Delaware, and Marvin Dukes ,of Georgia; he is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, Troop 261 Scout family, a friend, Mark Murphy and his sons Mark Jr. and Mitchell, and many other friends and co-workers.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the local Food for Families organization.
Jerry’s family would like to thank Dr. Jeff Jones, Diana Gargus and her son Jonathan, Philomenia Hill, and all his friends at First National Bank for taking care of Jerry during his last peaceful days on this earth.
