

A celebration of life service for Joe Floyd Lockhart, age 90, of Killeen, will be at LifeWay Fellowship in Killeen, on May 10, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Jimmy Towers officiating. Visitation will be on May 10, 2017 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. before the life service. Burial will follow at Pidcoke Cemetery.
Mr. Lockhart died May 8, 2017 at his home, surrounded by friends. He was born July 13, 1926 in Pidcoke, Texas to the late Herman and Byrdie (Kemp) Lockhart.
Joe lived most his life in Killeen. He attended school in Pidcoke and then transferred to Gatesville in 1941. He graduated from Gatesville High School in 1943.
Joe loved the Lord, he was baptized in the Cowhouse Creek. He served as Sunday School Superintendent for Pidcoke Baptist Church.
After high school Joe attended Howard Payne University until he was called to serve his country in WWII. Joe was inducted into the U.S. Navy in 1944 and discharged in July 1946. He was also in the Enlisted Reserve Corp while in the U.S. Navy.
Joe married the love of his life, Norma Belle Johnson on July 17, 1946 in Cisco, Texas. Her father was the officiant of the wedding.
Joe received his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Howard Payne University in Brownwood. He received his Master’s Degree in Education from Southwest University in San Marcos.
Joe loved children and he started teaching school in Comanche. He was a coach and he also taught 8th grade. His next teaching and coaching years were from September 1950 to June 1955 at Camp Hood. Joe moved to Killeen Independent School District from 1955 to 1986. He was a Truant Officer from 1955 to 1960. He was the Assistance Principal and the Principal at Meadows Elementary from 1960 to 1962. He was the Principal at Pershing Park Elementary from 1962-1981. He was the Principal at Duncan Elementary School from 1981-1986.
Joe was a member of the Mt. Hiram Masonic Lodge #595 of Copperas Cove, a member of the Killeen Schools Retirees Association, and a member of LifeWay Fellowship of Killeen.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Byrdie Lockhart. His brothers, Arnold Ray and Jack Lockhart. His sister, Dorothy June Lockhart. His son, Joe Floyd “Jody” Lockhart Jr. and his wife, Norma Belle Lockhart.
Joe is survived by his niece, Lauriejo Johnson Parnell and her husband, Leslie of Cedar Park. His great-niece, Lydia Parnell. His niece, Roxanne Johnson Moore Walker and her husband, John of Coaldale, Colorado. His sister-in-law, Barbara Johnson of Waco. His treasured friends, Kenneth and Marjory Haedge.
The family expresses gratitude to Joe’s Visiting Angels: Ceci King, Rhonda Nelson, Margaret Decquir, Jennifer McDaniel, Michelle Parker and Veda Frank. The family also expresses gratitude to the loving daily care provided by his dear friend, Marjory Haedge. She was Joe’s caregiver during his last years after the loss of his wife in 2009.
