Mrs. Margaret “Susan” Walters, age 75, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2025, in Killeen, Texas. Born on September 15, 1949, in Miami, Florida, Susan lived a life marked by service, devotion to family and faith, and a deep love for animals and the outdoors.
Susan was the daughter of Jan Johnson Sr. and Esther Johnson and grew up alongside her sister, Beth Parker, and brother, Jan Johnson, in Avon Park, Florida. Her early years laid the foundation for a life of compassion and commitment to others.
Throughout her professional life, Susan dedicated herself to serving her community. She worked in Civil Service for the military for thirteen years—a role that reflected her strong sense of duty. In addition to this work, she served as a substitute teacher and also contributed her time and talents to the local police department.
A devoted member of the First United Methodist Church of Killeen, Susan’s faith was central to her life. She actively participated in many aspects of church life—singing in the choir, playing hand bells, joining the Mary Ruth Circle, attending services and gatherings regularly, and offering comfort through the card ministry. Her dedication did not go unnoticed; near the end of her journey on earth, her room was lovingly filled with cards from fellow congregants—each one a testament to the lives she touched through her kindness and unwavering spirit.
Susan was also a proud member of the Eastern Star organization of Killeen and volunteered her time toward charitable efforts that benefited those in need within her community.
Family was at the heart of everything Susan did. She was a committed wife to her late husband, Tom Walters, and a devoted mother to their children: son, Tommy Walters of Killeen, and daughter, Shelly Austin, and her husband, Sean, of Round Rock. She cherished every moment spent with them—whether it was enjoying outings to the movies or celebrating holidays together. One of her greatest joys was being “Grandma” to Sean Michael Austin of Round Rock.
Her love extended beyond people to animals as well; Susan had a special place in her heart for dogs and often rescued them—welcoming them into her home as beloved family members. She found joy in simple pleasures: basking in sunshine by the water’s edge, socializing with friends old and new, or sharing laughter during family gatherings.
Susan’s legacy is one of warmth, generosity, faithfulness, and love—a life lived fully with purpose and grace.
She is survived by her son, Tommy Walters; daughter, Shelly Austin and husband Sean Austin; grandson, Sean Michael Austin; sister, Beth Parker; brother, Jan Johnson; along with many friends whose lives were enriched by knowing her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Walters (2007); father, Jan Johnson Sr.; and mother, Esther Johnson.
May Susan’s memory continue to bring comfort to all who knew and loved her. A memorial service will be held on August 13, 2025, at 2:00 PM at First United Methodist Church, 3501 E. Elms Road. Immediately after the service, a reception will be held in the Gary and John Helen Purser Fellowship Hall at First United Methodist Church.
