I write to honor and remember Marty Menn, a dear friend and colleague whose passing leaves a profound absence in my life and in the lives of all who had the privilege of working with him.

For twelve years, we worked together during a time of extraordinary technological change. That work required patience, judgment, curiosity, and steadiness—qualities Marty consistently exhibited, along with invaluable institutional knowledge. I often relied on his technical skill and came to trust not only what he knew, but the thoughtful way he applied that knowledge.

As much as I valued his skill and experience, I valued his friendship more. He was supportive in both obvious and quiet ways. He listened carefully, not simply waiting for his turn to speak, but taking in what others were saying and helping them find a clearer path forward. In demanding moments, that kind of presence mattered.

He also had a delightful sense of humor. It was never forced and never unkind. His humor had a way of teasing us through difficult stretches, helping us keep perspective when the work was complicated and felt especially challenging.

I will remember him for his competence, his generosity, his patience, and the good spirit he brought to our shared work. I will remember the conversations, the problem-solving, the laughter, and the steady reassurance of knowing he was there.

Our friendship continued after we retired. We traveled together, stayed in touch, and met periodically for lunch, keeping alive the easy companionship that had begun during our working years. It was only recently that we had lunch together, and Marty looked well and was in good spirits. That memory made the news of his untimely passing more shocking and deeply saddening.

His life and friendship made a difference. I am grateful for the years we worked together, and even more grateful for the friendship that grew from that work. I will miss him deeply and remember him with affection, respect, and gratitude.

I was fortunate to meet Marty about 35 years ago, when I was practically a kid, working at CTC, just down the hall from him.  He was 100% the real deal — always a gentleman, always kind, always genuine and you could always count on him to be the same no matter what.

My office was right across the hall from his, so I was lucky enough to have lots of opportunities to sit and chat with him over the years. Looking back, I’m sure I gained things from those conversations — that have helped me throughout my life here at the college, probably in ways I don’t even realize.

Marty worked incredibly hard for CTC and was someone who truly cared about what he did.  His character and kindness is something to be admired.  I can still hear him laugh.

My Mother knew Marty too - she worked with him for almost 20 years.  Everyone loved Marty.  He made a real impression  on so many people.
