.Mildred Geneva Thornton Lanier (Shortie) entered this world on February 28, 1922 and departed for her heavenly home on June 23, 2016. She was born to John Edgar (J.E.) Thornton and Maude Estelle Johnson Thornton in Bell County where Still House Hollow Lake is now located. She Married Jack Lanier on September 12, 1940 and he preceded her in death on February 23, 1989.
She worked at various jobs during the war before moving back to Killeen where she was employed by Civil Service at Ft. Hood for over 33 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Killeen for 83 years where she taught Sunday School for over 20 years. She was an active member of the Women’s Missionary Union and Christian Women’s Club for several years.
Shortie loved to travel and took many trips through the years with family and friends. Each trip was an adventure to her and, in typical Shortie fashion, never met a stranger no matter where she was.
She loved her family unconditionally. She is survived by two sisters, Doris Gilliam and Marie Byers of Killeen and one brother, Billy Thornton and his wife Annette of Salado. She was affectionally known as “Little Auntie” to her numerous nieces and nephews, including great and great-great- nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Monday, June 27, 2016 from 6:00-8:00pm at Crawford Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen, Texas. Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 28, at 10:00 am at Crawford Bowers in Killeen. Burial to follow at Killeen City Cememtery.
