Nellie Pearl (Rodgers) Cave, 91, left this world on December 10, 2013 after a brief illness. She was born on a ranch near Melvin, TX in McCollough County to John W. and Ruby A (Barton) Rodgers on January 14, 1922. As an only child she was raised on the ranch where her father was the foreman.
After graduating high school she went on to the Texas State College for Women in Denton and became a school teacher. She began her teaching career in a one room school house in Fly Gap, TX. in the early 1940’s where part of her contract was to attend church, be in by dusk and no fraternization.
She married Claude C “Peewee” Cave Jr. on May 27, 1950 on the White Ranch outside of Brady, TX.
Nellie retired from Sugar Loaf Elementary and KISD in 1978, but continued to substitute teach until 1988.
She was preceded in death by her husband Claude C. Cave Jr. in 2010; she is survived by her son Carmon W “Bill” Cave Sr. and wife Debbie. Her daughter Beverly S Brown-Herbert and husband Max, 7 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
The cave family will receive guests for a time of visitation on Thursday, December 12, 2013 from 6-8 PM at Crawford-Bowers Funeral home of Killeen. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 13, 2013 at the First Baptist Church Florence beginning at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow in the Maxdale Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Maxdale Cemetery Association or the Maxdale Ladies Club.
