P. Terry Tuggle

February 3, 1939 – July 20, 2026

Patrick Terry Tuggle was born on February 3, 1939, to Helen (Wells) and Hobart Gleason “Pat” Tuggle. Though he was born in Kansas, he got to his beloved Odessa, Texas, as fast as he could - 10 days later. Terry was raised in Odessa, and in 2014, he was honored by the Heritage of Odessa Foundation as a Distinguished former Odessan.

Terry graduated from Odessa High School in 1957, earned his B.A. at the University of Texas at Austin, and attended the Southwest Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University.

In 1977, Terry married Joyce (Prock), who encouraged and supported him in all his endeavors. In their almost 49 years of marriage, they shared and enjoyed many outdoor activities, including golf, backpacking, and motorcycling. Civic events were important and attended by both, and they travelled together for business and pleasure. But family and family gatherings were their favorite. Terry dearly loved family.

Terry’s long and accomplished banking career took him from Odessa to Austin to Kingwood, and finally to Killeen. Beginning in 1988, he held the following positions at one time or another with First National Bank Texas and Fort Hood National Bank: President, Chief Executive Officer, and/or Chairman of the Board. And most recently, he was named Chairman Emeritus of First National Bank Texas (FNBT). For over 68 years, Terry gave the banking world his best. He loved his banking family. He was recognized by the Texas Bankers Association as a 50-year Banker in 2008 and was inducted into the Texas Banker's Hall of Fame in 2016.

Terry loved his community and received the coveted Roy J. Smith Award for Outstanding Community Service. He also loved soldiers and is one of only a few civilians to be inducted into the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club. In 2004, he was designated as a Fort Hood Good Neighbor, a valued honor. He was the recipient of the Association of the United States Army's MG Anthony J. Drexel Biddle Award for his outstanding and continuous service to the U.S. Army Soldier. In 2026, the Association of the United States Army, Central Texas Chapter (AUSA), presented him with the Terry Tuggle Leadership and Legacy Award.

He served on the board of directors of many professional and civic organizations including the Armed Forces Financial Network (AFFN); the Association of Military Banks of America (also Chairman); the Association of United States Army, Central Texas Chapter (past President); the Killeen Economic Development Corporation; the Killeen Industrial Foundation (past president and charter member); the Killeen Independent School District Educational Foundation; the Greater Killeen Chamber of Commerce, Governmental Affairs & Local Affairs (Chairman and Past President); and the Mounted Warfare Foundation.

Terry was a member of the Killeen/Harker Heights Rotary Club; Independent Bankers Association of Texas (Area Advisor and member of the Legislative Committee); and Boy Scouts of America (Longhorn Council). Notably, he received the Silver Eagle Award from the Boy Scouts organization in 2008.

As an avid biker, hiker, hunter, and outdoorsman, it has been said he was equal parts John Wayne and Paul Newman, but funnier and cooler and more Texan than both. While so many will remember him for his extraordinary accomplishments in banking and the remarkable institution he helped build, behind every title was a man whose influence reached far beyond the boardroom. His leadership, vision, integrity and commitment to serving others left an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come. He was manners, grace, talent, grit, strength, adventure, ruggedness and determination all rolled into one true gentleman. There is comfort in knowing his life was one of purpose, and the values he embodied -- hard work, humility, faith, and service -- will live on.

He was a long-time member of Lifeway Fellowship church. As of July 20, 2026, Terry is with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, alive and well…forever!

He is preceded in death by his parents. Surviving him are his loving wife, Joyce; sisters Merry Calderoni of San Miguel Allende, Mexico and Judie Payne (Tom) of Belleville, Illinois; his sons Shaun (Cathie) of Leander and Kevin of Bastrop. Five grandchildren: Cullen, Devin (Kyla), Cooper (Hayley), Peyton, and Avery (Travis). Four great-grandchildren: Titus, Tripp, Truett, and Sadie.

Also surviving him are two nieces, Ashley Payne and Crystal Calderoni and one nephew T. J. Payne (Parul). He is also lovingly remembered by his wife’s sister, Jeanie Carden, and her children, Joshua, Jason, Jennifer (Aaron) and Jonathan (Joanna).

Visitation is Monday, July 27, 2026, 5 - 7pm at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home, 1615 S. Ft. Hood St., Killeen, Texas 76542.

The Celebration of Life service will be held Tuesday, July 28, 2026, 10:00am at First Baptist Church Killeen, 3310 S. W S Young Dr., Killeen, Texas 76542. Burial will follow at Live Oak Cemetery in Youngsport.

Pallbearers are Cullen, Cooper, Peyton, and Avery Tuggle, Travis Roberts, and Shaun and Kevin Tuggle.

Honorary pallbearers are Devin Tuggle, Army Ranger School, Ft. Benning, Georgia; and the Directors of First National Bank Texas.

The family is grateful to Amedysis Hospice for their tender care.
