

Services for Richard August Viergutz, 68, of Killeen will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 8, 2010 at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen with full military honors. Mr. Viergutz died Wednesday, March 31, 2010 in a Killeen hospital. Services have been entrusted to Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen.
Richard was born July 30, 1941 in Duluth, MN to August Thomas Viergutz and Genevieve Renaud Viergutz. He grew up in Duluth and joined the United States Army in 1958 and was stationed in France for three years. While in France he met and married Barbara Grace. They were married February 28, 1961 in Orleans, France. Richard was also stationed in Long Island, Arizona, Vietnam, Korea, six years in Germany, and finally Missouri where he retired from the Army in 1978. While in the military he received numerous merits including the Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Service Medal, good conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, among others.
Richard and Barbara moved to Killeen in 1978. He worked in Civil Service for DA DOLIPBO from 1981to 2004. He was a member of the Masons, VFW Lodge of Harker Heights, and a Safety Hunter Instructor at Fort Hood.
Mr. Viergutz is preceded in death by two sons, Richard Lee Viergutz (Nov. 28, 1985) and Michael Todd Viergutz (Jan. 19, 2000).
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Barbara Viergutz of Killeen and a brother, Lee Viergutz of Temple, and one granddaughter, Karee L. Viergutz of Conroe.
