Born in Butte, Montana to Robert and Charlotte Hurkes on January 30, 1955, Susan spent much of her early life in South Carolina. After marrying Joe Denham, she lived in North Carolina and then in Germany before she and her family called Texas home. During the early years in Texas, the family lived in Nolanville while her husband, Joe, was on active duty with the army. Later, they moved to Harker Heights to the current family home.
After obtaining her realtors license, Susan spent many enjoyable years working as an agent with Coldwell Banker Wright Real Estate in Killeen, Texas. She loved her work and made many friends during that time.
She also enjoyed a special relationship with the friends that she and her husband made during the many years of active membership in the Mid Texas Corvette Club in Killen, Texas. She devoted much time to the club’s fundraising events, which, primarily, were for support of children’s charities and for the children of our military families, as well as to the club’s numerous other activities. Susan’s interest in charitable organizations also led to her membership in the Eastern Star organization.
Susan’s greatest love was for her family. It was her love, warmth, and caring nature as well as the priority that she placed on family that made her home a special place. She has been very special to many, and her husband, children, grandchildren, relatives, friends, and pet dogs are missing her dearly.
She is survived by her husband, Joe Denham; her son, Steven Denham, and his wife, Sarah; her daughter, Carlette Eller, and her husband, Chip; her grandchildren, Billy, Steven, Jonathan, Will, and Andrew; her mother, Charlotte Hurkes; her siblings, Nicolette, Sherry, Gloria, Linda, Robert, and Teresa; and her pet dogs, Tidbit, Foxy, Maxie, Tinkerbell, and Tizzy.
Susan was preceded in death by her father, Robert Hurkes, and by her son, Jonathan Denham.
Visitation will be at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen on June 27, 2011 from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM, and the funeral service and celebration of Susan’s life will follow at the Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home chapel at 1:00 PM. Interment after the service will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Nolanville, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Arrangements for Mrs. Denham are under the direction of Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home.
