Tommy Blanton, beloved husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2025, in Temple, Texas at the age of 72. Born in Fort Benning, Georgia, on June 7, 1952, Tommy lived a life full of love, honor, and adventure.
He proudly served in the United States Army for 22 years, retiring as a First Sergeant with the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood. A decorated Apache helicopter pilot, Tommy’s military service included deployments such as Operation Just Cause in Panama. Following his retirement from the Army, he continued his life of service by working for 24 years at Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children in Youngsport, Texas—a role he cherished deeply.
Tommy was a proud graduate of Baker High School and studied criminology at Central Texas College. He was the definition of patriotism and dedication, following in the footsteps of his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather before him—all military men.
A cruise enthusiast to the core, Tommy took over 30 cruises, but his favorite was a 14-day trip through the Panama Canal with his wife Nancy and dear friends. He loved books, strong coffee, authentic Mexican food, and his wife's cooking. He never missed a chance to cheer on his Texas Longhorns—Hook 'Em!
Tommy was known for his undying grit, steady strength, and a love for his family that knew no bounds. He was easygoing, loyal, and deeply proud of his grandchildren, especially his grandson Carlos, whom he lovingly encouraged to pursue big dreams, no matter the challenges.
Tommy is survived by his devoted wife of 37 years, Nancy Blanton; sons David Wayne Blanton and Tommy Lee Blanton; stepdaughters Nancy Garberich and Carmen Tina Colón; stepson Julio Ceasar Colón and Jeffrey David Garberich (son-in-law); grandson and best friend Carlos Cesar Juarez-Colon; granddaughters Victoria Rose Linn and Alexandra Rose Linn; granddaughter-in-law Nicoletta Sophia Carvaruso; and a large, loving family of siblings: Roger (Karen) Blanton, Harvetta Hayes, Linda Leger, David (Cordelia) Root, Harvey Alan (Jan) Blanton, Jodie (Bobby) Six, Fran (Nick) Hilton, and Phillip (Tara) Root. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Carrie Root and Harvey Olen Blanton; his stepfather Russell Root; sisters Pamela Principe and Melanie Radick; and brothers Bill and Michael Root.
A visitation will be held on June 2nd from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen, Texas. Funeral services with full military honors will follow on June 3rd at 9:30 a.m., also at Crawford-Bowers, with burial at 11:00 a.m. at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery. Services will be officiated by Joe Loughlin.
Tommy will be remembered as a hero, a gentleman, and a family man through and through. His strength, humor, and heart live on in the stories, laughter, and legacy he leaves behind.
