

She was born February 10, 1940, in Galveston, Texas, a daughter of the late Robert Fred Ernest and Grace Aileen Gates (nee Lott).
Bette was born and raised on Galveston Island. As a child she enjoyed exploring the historic sites, including the Bishops Palace. She was an avid musician and played first chair clarinet in the Ball Hall School band. While in high school she met her beloved husband Joe, marrying in 1958.
For more than 40 years, Bette poured her heart into Kingwood, Texas. She helped start Good Shepherd Episcopal School, a preschool and kindergarten that has nurtured two generations of children. As its guiding spirit until her retirement in 2024, Bette touched countless families with her kindness, wisdom and love.
Bette was an avid reader especially of mysteries and was rarely without a book in her bag. She also enjoyed listening to music, playing card games and cooking for her friends and family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 52 years, Joe William Herring. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Jean Aileen Gates and several beloved family cats.
She is survived by her son, William Gates Herring of Kingwood, Texas; her daughter and son-in-law, Judith Ann Herring-Moir and David Moir of Aberdeen, Scotland; and her granddaughter, Maisie Elin Moir of Aberdeen, Scotland.
In addition, Bette is remembered by many extended family members and friends who will dearly miss her.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Bette’s memory to a local Animal Charity of their choice.
A funeral service will be held at Good Shepherd Episcopal, located at 2929 Woodland Hills Dr, Kingwood, TX 77339, United States. The service is scheduled for September 30, 2025, from 10:00 am with Father Mark Brown officiating.
