

Flora Olivia Jackson McCants, 89, died at her home on Saturday June 19, 2010. Born in Houston on July 31, 1920, she graduated from the first Sam Houston High School in 1937 and Rice Institute in 1941. She married Malcolm Thomas McCants in 1941. After he became a consulting engineer in 1955, they traveled extensively, making many lifelong friends.
As a member of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church she helped start the Parish Library in 1959 and served as a librarian for many years thereafter. An active volunteer, Flora was a member of the Altar Guild, a past president of the Owen Wister Literary Society and a supporter of the Fondren Library at Rice, as well as a member of the DAR and The Blue Bird Circle - working many hours at their resale shop.
Flora was a loving partner to Malcolm for over 60 years and his caretaker before his death from ALS. Predeceased by her brother Herbert Brooks Jackson, she is survived by family that will miss her greatly - daughter Julianne McCants of Kingwood, son Michael Malcolm McCants and his wife Florence Lyons McCants of Austin, grandsons Gerald Thomas McCants and Stephen Matthew McCants of Austin, David Shannon McCants, MD and his wife Naomi Lee McCants, MD of Houston, sister Annie Laurie Mahoney of Victoria, TX. She will also be missed by her dear friend Louisette Roser Michaels of Westport, CT.
A service will be held at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road on July 1 at 2t:00pm. Memorials may be made to the St Martin’s Church Outreach Fund, The Blue Bird Circle or the John T. McCants Scholarship Fund at Rice University.
