George Kenneth Buckow passed away on June 30, 2010 in Houston, TX. He was born in Humble, TX on August 12, 1932 to the late George and Faye Buckow. George grew up in Houston and attended Jeff Davis High School. He graduated from Sam Houston State University in 1956. While at Sam Houston, George pledged and became a member of the Fraternal Order of the Caballero Fraternity and later became a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. George was well respected for his commitment to his fraternity, its members, and its fund raising efforts for the new Sigma Chi House at SHSU. In April 1999, he was awarded the Sam Houston State University Alumni Association Service Award for exemplifying the University motto: The measure of a life is its service.
George was a designer and artist and received many awards and honors for his work. His talents took him to such notable companies as Wetmore and Company, Ritchie Advertising Agency, and Sportfolio magazine. He was a partner with The Communications Group and later started a design firm, Silver Moon Art Works, with his high school friend. In 1980, George left the graphic design business and became a successful sales representative for Wetmore Printing Company. He retired in 1998.
George was President of the Art Director's Club and served on the Board of Directors. Appointed by Mayor Louie Welch, he was a charter member of the Houston Municipal Art Commission.
George is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara Buckow; daughters, Shana Hogan and Lisa Price and her husband David; grandchildren Trey Hogan and Hannah Price; sisters Jane Turner and Barbara Schmid and her husband Bob; sister-in-law Shirley Eggleston and husband Alvin and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
George was an avid sports fan and loved any game day. He loved TV and movies and a good party!
A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 4 at 2:00 PM at Kingwood Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions in George's memory to the Sigma Chi Epsilon Psi House Corporation at 3215 Robinhood, Houston, Texas 77005.
