She was born in Hammond, Indiana on May 10, 1932. She was one of eight siblings born to Martin and Josephine Hoholek. She attended St. Casimir Catholic School in Hammond through the 8th grade, and she went on to become the valedictorian of the class of 1950 at Hammond Tech High School. She earned a full scholarship to Indiana University. Her father passed away when she was 11 years of age, and as a result Helen was unable to attend university. She would stay home to help her mother and siblings. Upon high school graduation, Helen became an executive secretary at Standard Oil Co. where she met the love of her life, Frank Applegate of Memphis, TN. Frank and Helen married on September 25, 1954. They were married 65 ½ years, to the day. Together, they raised three children. Helen was a devoted wife and mother and loved her children deeply. She was blessed with four grandchildren and two beautiful great granddaughters, whom she absolutely adored. As a devoted Catholic, Helen prayed her Rosary daily and was an excellent example of a life of faith. Helen played in a bridge club for most of her adult life, and many lifelong friendships were formed. She played golf well into her 70s and was a member of the Kingwood Garden Club and Hi Neighbor Club.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents and beloved siblings, Stanley Hoholek, Henry Hoholek, Mary Hoholek Miller and Bernice Hoholek Doppler.
She is survived by her husband Frank Applegate, three children Kenneth Applegate (Jean) of San Antonio, TX, Patricia Barnes (Patrick) of Kingwood, TX, Glenn Applegate, MD of Somerset, Wisconsin. Her grandchildren, Erin Wright, Blake Barnes, Shane Applegate (Lauren) and Kallie Applegate. Her great grandchildren Aubree and Ava Wright. She is survived by many beloved nieces and nephews as well.
Due to the restrictions caused by the Corona Virus, the family will hold a private visitation and Rosary followed by interment. A memorial mass is planned for a future date.
