Helen (Fiedler) Redd, age 99 years, of Houston, Texas, passed away on November 17, 2022. She was the daughter of the late Josef and Theresia (Maikish) Fiedler. Helen was born in Wells, Texas on November 25, 1922, the 5th of 10 children. She graduated valedictorian from Forest High School, Class of 1940, and married S.C. Redd in 1941. Together they raised their seven children during their 47 years of marriage. Helen was the loving grandmother of 12 grandchildren, and “GiGi” to 22 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren. Helen and S.C. lived in Wells, Orange, and Woodville before moving to Houston in 1950. Helen was a homemaker, devoted to taking care of her husband and raising their children. She attended Sunday school and church regularly with her children as well as all the school activities, family camping trips and annual family reunions. In 1965, Helen took a job at a private school, where she learned to develop lesson plans and teach. Later, she worked as a substitute teacher in the Houston Independent School District and then took a job as a Teacher’s Aide at Meadows Elementary School. She retired at the age of 79. While she enjoyed taking care of her home and family, she also enjoyed working outside of her home and developed many lasting friendships in her community, at her church, and at work.
Helen enjoyed cooking traditional southern food. She was an excellent cook and baker, through which she created fond memories for her children and grandchildren. She was known for her homemade hot rolls, which were always a staple at Sunday family dinners and all the holidays. There was always a delicious meal and a bed for the many relatives and friends who visited regularly over the years. The lively conversations and laughs shared over the dinner table will always be cherished memories. In addition to cooking, Helen enjoyed sewing, reading, traveling, working in her garden and flower beds, and bible study classes. Most important to her was spending time with her family. Over the years, she would assist in the care of her grandchildren, and she took frequent road trips to visit her sisters, brothers, nieces, and nephews. Helen described her life as having four seasons: her childhood years growing up on a farm with a close-knit family; her married life raising her children with her husband; her career; and her retirement. She lived every season to the fullest. She had a limitless capacity to love paired with incredible strength. Helen leaves behind a wonderful legacy and will be remembered for her kindness, her family values, and her generous and loving heart. Her energy and joy in life was an inspiration.
To Helen’s caregivers, the family extends a heartfelt thank you for your dedication, compassion, love, and kindness.
