Howard attended James E. Gunn Elementary School and graduated as the valedictorian from I.M. Terrell High School in Fort Worth. As a young man, he moved to California to pursue his educational goals. He graduated with his Associates of Arts from Los Angeles City College and his bachelor's degree from California State University, Dominguez Hills. Between degrees, he served for two years in the Army during the Korean War. He also earned his master’s degree in Public Administration with a concentration in Healthcare Administration from the University of Southern California in January 1974.
While in college, Howard worked for the federal government as a postal worker, and transitioned as a hospital administrator with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) upon completion of his master’s degree. After retiring from the VA, Howard changed careers and worked as an automobile salesperson where he won several awards for his outstanding performance.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Shirley Ward; and his nephew, Gregory Ward.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria (née Jordan); daughters, LeyAnne Ward Odle (husband, Chris Odle), Alison Ward, and Janeane Ward; son, Dr. Howard Lee Ward, Jr; nephew, Dana Ward; ten great nephews and nieces; countless first cousins and second cousins on both the Ward and Johnson sides; and numerous close friends.
Howard was beloved by so many people. He never met a stranger and had a knack for connecting with people. He loved the Lord and was faithful in daily personal devotions. He also dedicated his time to the church by serving as both a deacon and usher. Howard loved ESPN and had encyclopedic knowledge on various sports, but especially the NFL and his beloved (yet, frustrating) Dallas Cowboys. Howard was a loving, faithful husband and father, and is enjoying his eternal reward.
