Jeffrey Wells Oppel, 66, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family—a fitting exit for a man who always preferred being in good company and on his own terms. Born in Roswell, New Mexico (yes, that Roswell), Jeff grew up in Houston, Texas, where he developed his signature charm, quick wit, and deeply Texan love for grilling meat and watching Longhorn football.
Jeff graduated from the University of Texas at Austin— hook 'em horns!—and later earned his law degree from South Texas College of Law. Whether in the courtroom or in conversation, Jeff was known for his sharp mind, big heart, and even bigger opinions (usually shared from the comfort of his back patio, remote in hand and football on screen).
He was a girl dad through and through to his two daughters, Crysta Marie Dillashaw and Savannah Jo Oppel, who inherited his stubbornness and sense of humor. Being a dad was a job he took so seriously, he even voluntarily did it for people that weren’t his own kids. He was also the proud and doting "Grand Dude" to one granddaughter, Lindsley Ann Dillashaw, whom he spoiled unapologetically.
Jeff had a true passion for the simple joys: watering his plants, cooking outside year-round, spending time at the family cabin in Wisconsin, and listening to all his music. He was loyal, generous, hilarious, hard-working, and deeply loved by those lucky enough to be in his circle. If he teased you, he liked you. If he cooked for you, you were family.
He is survived by his daughters, granddaughter, and a loyal circle of family and friends who will forever miss his storytelling, his warmth, and his uncanny ability to make anything sound like a legal case—whether it was about politics, grilling techniques, or who should and shouldn’t be allowed in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
In lieu of flowers, please consider turning your music up, putting on the game, and raising a cold drink in his honor.
