JoAnne McCain Genus was born in Birmingham, AL on October 7, 1955 to Irma Jean McCain. In her later years, she was adopted by her maternal grandparents, Milton and Sallye Mccain (who both preceded her in death).
JoAnne spent her early years in Chicago, where she began her elementary education, and in Birmingham, where she went on to complete the remainder of her schooling. After graduating from Wenonah High School, “Class of 74,” she then decided to further her education at Tennessee State University in Nashville, TN.
After attending Tennessee State University, JoAnne decided to make Nashville her home, and that is where she met Earl James Genus. The two later moved to Humble TX and were married on March 6, 1986. To this union, they had two children Ian Reginald (who gained his wings before his Mom) and Alexandria.
JoAnne was the eldest of all the grandchildren. From the North to the South, she was uniquely connected and committed to her family. She had a relationship with all her cousins and had a special name for each and everyone. Not one of us can say that we have not “rocked the baby!” She loved to shop, to decorate, her cats and to spend quality time with Maxine and with Alex, who cared for her mom until the end.
JoAnne made her transition on November 21, 2020, leaving to cherish her memory is her husband Earl, her loving daughter Alexandria, her stepchildren Earl Jr., Evonne, and Elishia. Her loving mother Irma J. Howard, 5 siblings; Ronald J. McCain (Donna), Rosalyn Frazier, Hope Hawkins (Windell), Jacqueline Thomas (Shurman), LaShawn Mays and 2 brothers who preceded her in death Reginald McCain and Leonard David Mays. Her nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews loved her dearly, along with a host of other family and friends.
