Joe was a graduate of Hallsville High School and attended Kilgore College before joining the US Air Force in 1951. He served four years in the military during the Korean War. Within a month of his discharge he was hired by Continental Emsco Company, and his first job was running oil field supply equipment to oil rigs. While working for CECO he and his family lived in Houston, Lafayette, Corpus Christi, New Orleans, Midland, and Kingwood. Joe spent his entire professional career with the same employer, even through several company buy-outs and mergers. He retired after 41 years as one of its vice presidents.
Joe enjoyed many activities and community projects throughout his life. He was an avid golfer, gardener, and tinkerer. No matter where he was or what he was doing, he never met a stranger. He leaves behind many friends from the CECO Retirees, the Hallsville “H” Association, the Astros “311 Club”, the Humble Area Football League, and the Kingwood McDonald’s Coffee Group. As much as he enjoyed the company of friends, the joy of his life was his family. He loved being a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He particularly enjoyed the Hunt Family Reunions that he established with his siblings.
He leaves behind his beloved spouse of 54 years, Martha E. Hunt. He is survived by his daughter Debra E. Hunt and spouse Connie Moore of Galveston, daughter Tracy E. Mitchell of LaPorte, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Howard Hunt, his sister Karen Erwin, and brother-in-law Terry Small. He is survived by brother and sister-in-law Jimmy and Betsy Hunt of Hallsville; brother and sister-in-law Bobby and Delores Hunt of Hallsville; sister, Norma Small of Lubbock; sister and brother-in-law Shirley and Wesley Green of Longview; sister-in-law Pauline Hunt of Hallsville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
