Joel González

Joel attended Stephen F. Austin Elementary and Crockett Elementary, Lamar Junior High, and graduated from McAllen High School, Class of 1959. With steady determination and a practical mind, he went on to earn a business degree from Pan American University in 1971. In 2001, he moved to Humble, Texas, beginning a new chapter rooted in family and community.

In 1961, Joel entered the United States Air Force in San Antonio, TX, later transferring to Castle Air Force Base in Atwater, California, where he served as a firefighter until being medically discharged in August 1964. Even before his military service, he understood the value of hard work, holding a job in high school at La Dama Elegante. After the military, he built a career defined by diligence and integrity—first as an accountant with Cavazos and Moya, CPA, and then as an accountant and auditor with the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District, where he served until his retirement in 2001. Shortly after settling in Humble in 2001, Joel went to work in Customer Service at Minute Maid Park with the Houston Astros. When his grandkids started school he became affectionately known as "The Ice Cream Man" at Atascocita Springs Elementary. He also became very involved at St Mary Magdalene Catholic Church where he was a parishioner, would help count money once a month, became a Eucharistic Minister and an Acolyte.

In the rhythms of everyday life, Joel found joy in simple, meaningful pleasures: BBQing on a charcoal grill, perfecting homemade BBQ sauce, hunting deer, reading, and working word search word puzzles. He valued time spent with friends, and he carried a generous spirit that showed itself in the way he helped others who had gone through open heart surgery like he did. Above all, he took deep pride in helping raise and spending quality time with his two grandchildren, treasuring the moments that mattered most.

Joel was preceded in death by his wife, Ramona Isabel González; his parents, Juan F. González and Anita Alaniz González; and his siblings, Rogelio González (†Hortencia), Jose Gilberto González (Marina), Arturo Alberto González (Thelma), Irma Morales (†Esteban), and Irene González.

He is survived by his children, son Joel González II and daughter Rebecca Ann González (Dagoberto); and his grandchildren, Dagoberto González III (Trey) and Sophia Isabel González; his twin brother Juan Abel González (†Arcelia) and youngest brother Ruben Dario González (Rachel). Joel is also survived by numerous nieces nephews, godchildren, family, and friends.

Visitation will be held at Kingwood Funeral Home, 22800 Highway 59 North, Kingwood, TX 77339, on July 9, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A Rosary will be held at Kingwood Funeral Home on July 9, 2026, at 7:00 pm. A Funeral Service will be held at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, 527 S Houston Ave, Humble, TX 77338, on July 10, 2026, at 11:00 am. A Committal Service will follow at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr, Houston, TX 77038, on July 10, 2026, at 2:00 pm.
