Lloyd received his passport to earth August 3, 1937. He was sponsored by Margie and Rollie Garber who loved him dearly. He had a best friend named Eddy (Edith?) They walked to school together until the family moved to Colorado Springs. After the move siblings came, Janice and Skip (Melvin). Rollie needed a side business and because he had worked in a hatchery, He chose raising hens for eggs. There were 3 large chicken houses and yards. Lloyd’s part in the business was to gather eggs into buckets after school and carry them to the basement for Rollie to candle and crate. The unlucky roosters became dinner and eggs that did not candle cleanly became scrambled eggs, omelets, custard and many other things. Janice and Skip were still in diapers and Margie washed a bathtub of diapers everyday with Lloyd’s help. She said she could not have done it without him.
The family moved across town and for Lloyd this was great! The house was a block away from Prospect Lake, fishing in the summer and ice hockey in the winter. Lloyd was afternoon childcare for a couple of hours before Rollie came home, because Margie had an evening job operating the switchboard at the Broadmoor Hotel. The YMCA camp and Scout Camp were must haves for Lloyd. He earned his way to camp one twenty-five cent lawn at a time.
Lack of living wage employment forced the family to move to Phoenix. That fall Lloyd entered High School at Phoenix Union and Skip entered Kindergarten at Baltz Elementary School. High School was busy fun, Lloyd played in the band, was a cheerleader, and active in church youth groups. He had a job with Clay Smith’s Fine Arts and Jewelry of Scottsdale and a summer job in Colorado Springs.
College at Phoenix Jr. College and Arizona State took a bit more than four years earning his way. He played in a dance band, worked at an upscale Italian Restaurant and a host of catering gigs.
After graduation from college the Army. The draft had been leaning on him, so he just joined the Army Engineers. While at Fort Ord he became interested in photography. Lloyd took photos of each place the engineers went while in France and other locations.
After the Army we married, he went to work with DuPont. We had children, Lloyd’s work took a lot of time, but he tried to enjoy activities with the family. Camping, and Soccer, and Swim Team with Forest Cove Fighting Frogs took any extra time we might have had.
Kids grew up left home and there were marriages, and Grandchildren to cherish
September Fifteenth, twenty twenty-three Lloyd’s Visa for earth ran out, he had to go home. His Parents, both Siblings and a daughter were waiting for him at the door. Such a reunion !
