

Marilyn M. Evans passed away on November 22, 2023, at the age of 84. She is survived by her three children, William Evans and his wife Melissa, Paula Hollister and her husband John, Andrew Evans and his wife Allison and six grandchildren Jack, Grant, Megan, Taylor, Kylie and Knox. She is also survived by her brother Rodney McGrew and his wife Barbara. She was preceded in death by her husband Alfred G. Evans, her father, Robert Orm McGrew, and mother, Pauline Harriet Taylor, and her brother Robert McGrew.
Marilyn was born at home in Humboldt, Kansas and graduated from Corpus Christi W.B. Ray High School in 1957. She continued her education at Del Mar College before attending and graduating from the University of Texas at Austin. She was an active member of the sorority Alpha Delta Pi at the University of Texas. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education and began a career in teaching which eventually led her to Bakersfield, CA where she met Alfred. Marilyn and Alfred were married in Bakersfield in 1965 and moved to Alaska. They moved from Anchorage, AK to Denver, CO to Houston, TX due to Alfred’s lifetime career with Shell Oil Company. They also had an opportunity for an overseas assignment in Damascus, Syria in the 1980’s.
As early residents Al and Marilyn were active members of the Kingwood community. They made lifelong neighborhood friends that she truly cherished. From 1974 until her passing Marilyn was a member of the Kingwood Methodist Church. Marilyn and Al were dedicated students of the Seekers Sunday school group at the church. She had a multitude of friends and activities including a bridge group, a circle group, volunteered with various charitable organizations, involvement with the Women’s Republican Club and she worked for many years at election polling locations.
Marilyn’s lifelong passion for tracing her genealogy began when her favorite Aunt asked her to research a family name. She was very active and held many offices in numerous lineage societies. She was a Texas State President of The National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century as well as the Joseph Underwood Chapter Organizing President. She was also a member of the James Tull Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Thomas Bay Chapter of The Texas Society United States Daughters of 1812, Deacon John Tenney Chapter of National Society of New England Women, and THAGS, The Humble Area Genealogical Society, as well as others.
Marilyn loved to travel to learn about and experience different cultures. She traveled throughout the United States, especially the Colorado Rockies. She had many travel companions including Alfred, Rodney & Barbara, and her friend Connie as well as groups from Kingwood College and Kingwood Methodist Church. She travelled throughout Europe and the Middle East. Later in life, she traveled to Thailand and Singapore.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Houston’s Star of Hope Mission or St Jude’s Children Hospital which Marilyn supported throughout her life.
A celebration of life Friday, December 8, 2023 from 10:30 AM at Kingwood Methodist Church, 1799 Woodland Hills Dr, Houston, TX 77339. She will be buried at Houston National Ceremony with Alfred after a private ceremony.
