Michael graduated from Creston High School in 1970. He then proudly served his country for more than 20 years in the United States Navy, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer. His service to his country was a source of great pride and remained deeply important to him throughout his life. Some of Michael’s closest friendships were formed during his years in the Navy, and many of those friendships lasted throughout his life. Following his military career, Michael began a second career with the Federal Communications Commission, where he worked for 22 years before retiring.
Michael’s enjoyment of being at sea stayed with him long after his Navy years. He and his wife, Janice, took 16 cruises together, often with friends. He also loved music and enjoyed playing guitar.
Michael had a way of making conversation with just about anyone. He was known for his sense of humor and could make anybody laugh. He brought laughter to those around him, but beneath his humor was someone who cared deeply for his family and friends.
Michael is survived by his beloved wife, Janice Winters; his children, Kyle Winters, Scott (Rebekka) Winters, Anita Johansson, and Paul (Sara) Clair; his grandchildren, Sheldon Winters, Jordan Winters, KayLyn Winters, and Jakob Johansson; and his siblings, Chris (Dennis) Palmer, Mark (Janice) Winters, Terri (Don) Swanson, and Tom (Mary) Winters.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jack Winters; his mother, Mildred Winters; and his daughter, Kay Winters.
A celebration of Michael’s life will be held on Sunday, November 1, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at American Legion Post 179 in Grandville, Michigan.
Michael will be remembered for the laughter he brought to others, the friendships he made, and the love he had for his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Michael’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association or to an organization supporting Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), in honor of causes that were meaningful to his family.
