Mom was funny. She could reduce a party of NCO wives to tears with a simple quisp. I learned to talk hiding under the kitchen table, listening to the giggles. She was smart and she was practical. She learned French when she needed it and promptly lost it after she didn't.
Small children looked at her and trusted her automatically. A hysterical French boy once found her at a train station and demanded she find his mother (she did). Twenty years later, she gave me a ride to the San Antonio greyhound bus and and a small Spanish speaking boy required the same assistance.
After Daddy grow his beard, that made a striking pair at Christmas. A big heavy set man with a bushy white beard to midchest, a tiny blue-eyed, white haired woman.Small children got whiplash when they walked by.
Rick and I learned, if you could make her laugh, you could slide out of trouble.
She was brave. Woman in the Sixties did not pack four children in a Rambler and take a road trip all around the western half of the U.S. With an 11 year old navigator (to this day, maps fascinate me).
