Porter, New Braunfels, TX, his daughters-in-law, Gayle and Kristen, and his five beloved grandsons, Payton, Grayson, Chase, Zachary, and Paxton. Other survivors include his brothers and their wives, Glenn and Connie Porter, Van Buren, ARK and Dr. Edward and Mary Lou Porter, Frisco, TX and a number of nieces and cousins in Oklahoma.
Norman was born near Quapaw, OK in 1932. In high school he participated in baseball and basketball; then, after a year of college, he joined the Army and reached the rank of sergeant. While in the service, he was chosen to play on an armed services baseball team which competed in Japan, China and Okinawa.
After Korea, at the University of Tulsa he majored in petroleum engineering, serving as President of the Eng. Club and was selected for Who's Who in American Colleges.
In 1961 he began work for Tennessee Gas and Oil, now Tenneco, in Houston and outlying areas. As a production/operations engineer, he also worked in Corpus Christi. In 1967 he became a district manager for Brown Oil and Tools in New Orleans, then Corpus Christi. In 1972, he moved his family to Lafayette, LA and began working for Coastal Corporation. In 1974, he was transferred to Coastal's corporate office in Houston as Joint Ventures Manager.
During his years in Lafayette, LA and Kingwood, TX, he served as president of the Little League Baseball organizations. As president of the Forest Cove-Kingwood Little League, he was instrumental in the development of the playing fields which are still used today. He also served at different times as the president of Humble High School Athletic Booster Club and as president of the Ag Boosters Organization.
He loved to fish and hunt and shared his enthusiasm with David and Greg. Hunting in South Africa and fishing in Manitoba were two of the highlights of his life.
Upon retirement in 1996, he began supervising the development of David's ranch near Boerne, TX. He also supported his grandsons' athletic activities in Dallas, East Texas and New Braunfels and Greg's coaching assignments in New Braunfels and San Antonio. And, when he could no longer travel, his weekly phone conversations with them kept him involved in what they were doing.
