Pete was born to Fidencio and Josefa Ortiz in Pleasanton, TX on October 3rd, 1943. Pete was their only child together; Josefa later remarried to Alcario Gonzales, giving birth to Pete's younger siblings Carolina, Alcario Jr, Irene, and Vivian.
Pete lived his entire life as a die-hard Texan, through and through. He had humble beginnings in the trucking business, and passes on peacefully knowing that he went from driving trucks and cargo to owning an esteemed trucking and logistics business that he earned through self-discipline, determination, and the unwavering support of his loved ones. Pete had three sons from his first marriage: Ronnie, Kenneth, and Anthony.
Pete met his wife Cheryl while working at Landair Express in December of 1983. It took a few rounds of asking her to go dancing, but it wasn't long after Cheryl accepted his offer to be her dancing partner that they fell in love. They married on May 17th, 1986 surrounded by family and friends. In 1987, Pete and Cheryl welcomed their first child together, their son Brian. Four years later, in 1991, Pete and Cheryl brought their daughter Angela into the world. Nothing meant more to Pete than working hard to give his family everything he never had; he'd lasso the moon for his wife and kids, without hesitation.
Pete wasn't just all work and no play. He enjoyed an enriching life full of his passions, including owning cattle ranches where he would spend his earlier years of marriage with Cheryl tending to his land, cattle, and horses. He enjoyed traveling to new places and made friends everywhere he went. Pete was beloved in all of his circles - family, social, professional - and had a presence that was felt no matter where he went.
Without question, his accomplishments spanned far and wide. Pete Ortiz was the American Dream personified: a man that began with so little, and achieved so very much. His sister Vivian said it best in her biography of her mentor Pete written in 2021, titled "Im Not Done Yet!" - "His energy for life was truly inspirational! Pete was straightforwardly the epitome and embodiment of a self-made, well established businessman, while owning a ranch as far as the eyes could see!"
Pete was diagnosed with Alzheimers in October 2019. Since the time of his diagnosis, he has received the best care humanly possible in order to prolong his cognitive functioning in the face of inevitable deterioration, and to have a higher quality of life while being taken care of mainly by his wife, Cheryl. His family took every opportunity to spend time with the man they loved, whose true self and personality would shine through for years to come until the disease ran its course.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Josefa, his step-father, Alcario, and his son, Ronnie. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl, his children Brian and Angela, and his siblings Carolina, Alcario Jr, Irene, and Vivian.
A special thank you is extended to the healthcare professionals and staff at Devotion Hospice and Unlimited Care Cottages for support provided to Pete in his final months with us.
Memorial service held at Kingwood Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 10th. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimers Association.
