Robert Lawrence Becker

While our hearts are broken, we rejoice knowing Bob is now reunited in Heaven with his Heavenly Father; his parents, Chester Ronald Becker and Kathleen DeFields Becker; his stepmother, Jean Becker; and his brothers, David Becker and Jeffrey Becker.

Bob was born in Plainwell, Michigan, and proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force on July 14, 1954, faithfully serving his country.

God's plan for Bob's life included an incredible love story. While working as a hairstylist in Baytown, Texas, a beautiful young woman named Maria walked into his salon for a haircut. During their conversation, Bob mentioned that his hair model had unexpectedly backed out of an upcoming Dallas hair competition and jokingly asked if she would be his model. That chance meeting changed both of their lives forever. Just ten days later, on June 24, 1967, Bob and Maria were married, beginning 59 beautiful years of marriage built on faith, love, commitment, and family.

Maria still loves to tell one of her favorite stories—that Bob took "a country girl who would eat with her hands" and taught her how to enjoy a five-course meal. It became one of the many memories that reflected the patience, laughter, and deep love they shared throughout their marriage. Together they built a beautiful life filled with faith, family, adventure, wonderful food, and unwavering devotion to one another.

Throughout his life, Bob wore many hats and excelled in each one. During the early years of their marriage, Bob and Maria worked together at Dunkin' Donuts in Baytown. He later followed his passion for cooking, working offshore as a chef before joining Global Marine, where his career eventually took him overseas to Malta.

His passion for teaching led him to become an instrumental part of the Culinary Arts Vocational Education (CAVE) Program at Barbara Jordan School for Careers, where he helped shape and inspire countless students pursuing careers in the culinary arts. His mentorship, knowledge, and dedication left a lasting impact on both the program and the lives of the young people he taught. He later served as chef at Teal Lodge in Aransas Pass before he and Maria fulfilled another dream by opening Bob & Maria's Bakery in the early 1990s.

Many knew Bob because of his incredible talent in the kitchen. Others simply knew him as "their favorite customer." His warm smile, kind heart, genuine interest in people, and ability to make everyone feel important left a lasting impression wherever he went.

His greatest joy, however, was using his talents to bless those he loved most. Every birthday, graduation, wedding, holiday, and special family celebration was another opportunity for Bob to bake one of his famous cakes from his closely guarded secret recipe. His cakes became a treasured family tradition, and every slice was made with love.

Bob believed the best memories were made around the table. Whether it was breakfast with family, a holiday feast, or simply coffee and conversation, he understood that food wasn't just something to eat—it was one of the many ways to love people.

In the mid-1990s, Bob and Maria made Huffman, Texas, their home.

To know Bob was to know you were always welcome at his table. Whether he was preparing a meal, baking a cake, sharing a story, or simply enjoying the company of those he loved, he had a way of making everyone feel like family. Around his table, strangers became friends, friends became family, laughter was abundant, and countless memories were made.

Above all else, Bob loved Jesus Christ. He faithfully led his family to church from the time his children were young, teaching them there is no greater love than the love of Christ. He faithfully served as a deacon at Whosoever Will Gospel Church in Huffman, where he quietly lived out his faith through humility, compassion, and service to others. His faith wasn't reserved for Sunday mornings. It was reflected in the way he served others, welcomed strangers, loved his family, and lived each day with kindness and grace.

Whether he was serving his country, mentoring students, baking a cake, preparing a meal, reading a favorite book, or simply sharing a laugh around the table, Bob lived a life that pointed others toward kindness, generosity, and Christ.

Bob's greatest legacy is not found in his military service, career accomplishments, or culinary talents, but in the faith he instilled in his family and the example of Christ's love he demonstrated every day.

Bob will be remembered for his servant's heart, gentle spirit, quiet strength, unwavering faith, remarkable cooking and baking, love of reading, generous nature, and steadfast devotion to his wife and family.

He will also be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and quick wit. He always seemed to have the perfect comeback, bringing smiles to those around him. If you asked him how he was feeling, he'd often answer with a grin, "With both hands." His playful personality brought laughter into everyday moments, and his family will forever cherish the joy he brought into their lives.

In his later years, Bob courageously faced the challenges of dementia with the same quiet strength and dignity that characterized his life. Through every stage of the journey, he remained surrounded by the unwavering love of his family, especially the extraordinary devotion of his beloved wife, Maria. For years, she lovingly cared for him at home, honoring the vows they made 59 years earlier with remarkable patience, grace, and selfless love. Their journey became a beautiful testimony that true love is not measured only in the joyful moments, but in the faithfulness to walk beside one another through life's greatest challenges.

Bob leaves behind to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 59 years, Maria Eleana Becker; his daughter, Jeanna Marie Bumpas and husband Christopher (Chris) Edward Bumpas; his son, Christopher (Chris) Michael Becker and wife Jennifer Dawn Becker; his daughter, Reba Lyn Becker and wife Debbie Lyn Carpenter; and his stepson, Gerald Edward Smith and wife Nancy Smith.

He was the proud grandfather of Brandi Nicole Carlton and husband Justin David Carlton, Brittani Kalynn Parsons and husband Taylor William Parsons, Tori Amanda Smith and husband Caleb Anthony Smith, Matthew Dustin Bumpas, Lauren Marie Becker, and Alexander (Alex) Michael Becker.

His treasured great-grandchildren include Tanner William Parsons, Hayden Bennett Parsons, Emily Marie Carlton, Elizabeth Magdalene Carlton, Oliver Tate Parsons, Ryker James Smith, Leighton Christopher Parsons, Cash Anthony Smith, Lilah Rose Smith, Archie Gray Smith, Landon Isaac Parsons, and Millie Grace Smith.

He is also survived by his brother, Dale Becker; his sister, Joyce Newton; his sisters-in-law, Nita Becker and MaryLee Becker; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, former students, church family, neighbors, and countless friends whose lives were forever blessed by knowing him.

Those who knew Bob will remember the aroma of something wonderful cooking in the kitchen, the laughter that followed one of his famous one-liners, the pages of a well-read book, and the warmth of a home where everyone was welcomed. He leaves behind more than memories—he leaves behind a legacy of faith, service, generosity, laughter, hospitality, and unconditional love.

Although our hearts ache with his absence, we celebrate knowing Bob is now healed, whole, and in the presence of his Savior. His faith has become sight, and one glorious day we will gather around Heaven's table with him again. Until then, we will honor his legacy by loving God, loving one another, and always making room for one more at the table.
