Shelton was born February 22, 1950, in Elkhart Indiana to Robert and Marjorie Benson. He graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in Jacksonville, Fl in 1967 and Jacksonville University. On October 4, 1974 he married Mary Elizabeth, “Libby,” Brown, of Jacksonville, Fl.
Shelton was the loving husband of Libby Benson of Kingwood, TX, and devoted father of daughter Wendy Courington (son-in-law Brian), of Conroe TX, and son Chris Benson (daughter-in-law Jessica), of Victoria, TX. He has four grandchildren, Connor, Adelynn, Callie and Avery. He has four siblings, Andrea Wimberly (brother-in-law Al), Margaret Everidge (brother-in-law Joe), Mike Williams, and Tim Williams (deceased). He has two sister-in-laws Gina Stevens (brother-in-law Charles) and Rebecca Brown. He has four nieces and nephews, Brandon and Ryan Stevens and Lindsay and Cody Williams. He worked as a Senior National Accounts Manager for Purdue Pharma for 22 years, retiring in 2013. Shelton loved spending time with his family and grandchildren, was an active volunteer, and impassioned sports fan. He loved traveling with his wife of 45 years. Following treatment for cancer, Shelton touched the lives of others volunteering at MD Anderson in Houston, TX, Humble Area Assistance Ministries (HAAM), and church ministries with Second Baptist Church. As an avid sports fan, Shelton also served as a volunteer at the 2017 Superbowl in Houston, TX, and a recurring volunteer at the Shell Houston Open. Whether at church, morning coffee, on the softball field or golf course, Shelton was a charismatic, devoted and loyal friend.
