Herbert (Ron) Good passed away on Monday, March 18, 2013 at the age of 71, after an 18 year courageous battle with cancer. Even though cancer finally took Ron’s life, it did not destroy his faith in God. Ron never gave up and he always pressed on. He always encouraged others at MDA who were going through the same type of cancer as his and he gave them hope. Because of God’s love, faithfulness, mercy and grace, God lifted Ron up and carried him all the way.

Ron was born in Waco, Texas on March 20, 1941, the son of Ray and Lois Good of Waco. After graduation, from Brownfield High School where Ron was active in football, track, basketball and tennis, he attended Eastern New Mexico University and received his BBA degree in Business Administration. It was there he met on a blind date and later married his sweetheart Marilyn Thomas. After graduation from ENMU, Ron and Marilyn moved to Houston where Ron was employed by Shell Oil Company until he was called into service in 1965. He joined the United States Air Force and took his basic training in Amarillo, Texas and Tech School in Biloxi, Mississippi. He was stationed at Beale AFB in Marysville, California where their first son, Michael, was born. His next assignment took Ron’s family to Clark AFB in the Philippines for an 18 month tour of duty. While there, Ron served as an air traffic controller which gave him the opportunity to communicate with the SR-71 aircraft that replaced the U-2 Spy Plane. From the Philippines, Ron was sent to Bergstrom AFB in Austin, Texas where their second son, Kevin, was born.

After serving four years in the Air Force, Ron and his family moved back to Houston where he continued his career in the Oil and Gas Industry. Ron worked as Director of Materials and Facilities Management, and Vice President of Tennecon Services for Tenneco Energy in Houston, Texas. Later in his career he worked for Coastal Corporation as Vice President of Purchasing in Houston.

Ron was a member of Second Baptist Church, North Campus in Kingwood, Texas where he served as a deacon and was a member of the Bible Study Class, “Walking Together” taught by Don and Betty Carpenter. He loved being a member of this class because of Don and Betty’s teaching and also because, like a family, the members faithfully prayed, supported, and ministered to Ron in so many ways during his illness. Ron was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who brought so much joy, strength, love, and kindness to his family. He loved spending time with his grandchildren Joshua and Kylie Good, who he loved dearly, and he loved traveling with family and friends whenever possible. Ron’s sister–in-law and her husband once said of Ron that they considered Ron “as a man to ride the river with” (highest possible praise from the old westerners) because it aptly applied to him. Our family is so proud of Ron because he met all of life’s challenges with grace, dignity, determination, endurance and trust in the Lord. We will forever love him and miss him terribly. “He is our Hero”!!!

Ron is survived by his wife Marilyn of 50 years, his son Michael and wife Jill Good of The Woodlands, TX., and their son Joshua and daughter Kylie Good; his son Kevin and wife Staci Good of The Woodlands, TX.; his brother Kenneth and wife Janice Good of Houston, TX; nephews Steve Good and Wes and wife Tina Good of Houston, TX.; his niece Lynda and husband Dennis Heinrich of Houston, TX.; uncle, Glen and wife Winnie Everett of Dayton, TX.; cousins Chet and wife Alice Whatley of Kerrville, TX.; Wayne and wife Betty Whatley of Frisco, TX.; his aunt Jean and daughter Karen Good of Baton Rouge, LA.; many loving friends and relatives.

The family will receive friends for visitation from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 22, 2013 at Second Baptist Church, 22770 Highway 59 North, Kingwood, TX 77339. A service to celebrate Ron’s life will begin at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at the Houston National Cemetery.

A special thanks to the wonderful staff with Odyssey Hospice. Victoria Timario and Stacey Newman were such a blessing and we will always remember them and their special care of Ron. Thanks also for the special cards sent to Ron from the Odyssey Volunteer Department.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, TX 77210.

Dear Marilyn, Mike, Kevin & family,

Our deepest sympathies on the loss of Ron (I still think of him as Mr. Good). I have many fond memories of your family and of Ron teaching our Sunday School at the old FCBC and with Mike and Kevin growing up. May you find strength from our Lord in his passing and knowledge that he is no longer suffering after his long fight but is resting with our heavenly father.
God bless you,
Russell & Teresa Elsenbrock (Aaron, Jenna, Adam, and Anthony)

We often reflect that only God can create something from nothing--BUT--when two people meet one another and become friends, those two create something from indeed, makes us Godlike because we create something from nothing--just like God--and--Ron and Marilyn create friendship in ways that we all should emulate.
