Shirley and her husband, Quanah, first became neighbors in OST Acres when she was three and he was five. Though his family later moved down the road, OST Acres remained home, where they built their life and raised their family.
Quanah often told of praying that God would bless him with a faithful wife and a good mother to his children. He spent his life knowing that prayer had been answered. Shirley was a devoted wife, wonderful mother, and rock of a large, close-knit family. Their sons remained nearby, and in retirement Shirley and Quanah moved to Spanish Cove, continuing a lifetime of keeping family close.
Shirley had a gift for understanding people and making everyone feel they belonged. She noticed when someone felt left out and made sure they were included. Her Christmas gatherings reflected her heart—everyone was welcome and everyone had a gift. To Shirley, family extended beyond blood or marriage; spouses, extended family, friends, and even former spouses remained family.
She faced life’s challenges with remarkable strength, rarely complaining and always moving forward. She and Quanah loved traveling and seeing the country together.
Her faith and church family were important throughout her life, first at OST Baptist Church and later at First Baptist Church Huffman, where she treasured her Joy Sunday School Class and friendships.
Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Quanah Newell Martin. She is survived by her four sons, Quanah Jr.; Mike and wife Pam; David; and James and wife Karen; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren, with another on the way; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Shirley often said her family was what she was most proud of. Her life reflected 1 John 4: “God is love.” She loved deeply, welcomed freely, and leaves generations forever shaped by that love.
