Virginia “Grandma” “Mamaw” Golden passed away on August 20, 2026, at the age of 90.
Virginia was born on May 31, 1936, in Ohio, to Rufus Melvin Hanshell and Lula Margaret Hanshell. She later made Texas her home, where she built a life centered around family, caring for others, hard work, and laughter. Virginia worked as a nurse, a role that reflected her naturally caring and compassionate spirit.
Those who knew Virginia knew her as sweet and kindhearted, but also strong, determined, and one tough cookie. She had a wonderful sense of humor, loved to laugh, and was never afraid to speak her mind. She could be stubborn and spirited, but those qualities were part of what made her uniquely Virginia.
Virginia found joy in the simple things in life. She loved gardening, cooking, listening to Willie Nelson, and sitting outside on the porch with a glass of sweet tea or a cup of strong black coffee. She loved helping others whenever she could and rarely sat still, always finding something to do around the house or garden.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, JP “Bud” Golden, and her parents, Rufus and Lula Hanshell.
She is survived by her children, Judy Kay Swinney and Billy Terry; her grandchildren, Marcus Hysmith, Mellisa Millsap, Michael Myers, Krystal Terry, and William Terry; and her great-grandchildren, Jack Millsap Jr., Dylan Millsap, Tori Payne, Kayleigh Sigers, and Audrey Sigers.
Virginia leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, humor, compassion, and family. She will forever be remembered and cherished as Grandma and Mamaw.
