William John Brossart, otherwise known as Bill, Billy, Poppy, Popsicles, Doo, Dadnad, or Dooderdare died Monday, June 2, 2015 after a long, arduous, and ultimately defeating battle with cancer. We must add though, that man put up a good fight.
Bill’s loved ones describe him as a kind, funny, loving, intelligent man with a big heart and they are right. He was kind and consistently so. You’d often hear him he apologize even when it wasn’t his fault. Quinn. his grandson, said Bill cared for others first before himself: he was the first to hold the door, the last to get a plate, and literally gave the coat off his back.
And yes, Bill was funny. Not all of you might have seen the funny side because as Bill aged he became more sensitive and serious. In fact, Bill only watched G or PG rated movies but he was the funny guy who turned off the breaker and then hid on top the refrigerator in the dark when playing hide and go seek with a bunch of kids under 8 years old. He was the very same man that taped the pacifier to his eldest daughter Shawn’s mouth when she was a baby because she kept spitting it out and interrupting his card game. And Father Scott, his second born, loves to tell the story of when Bill got rid of their dog, Tuno, because Bill thought the dog was “just too ugly for our family”.
Bill was intelligent too. He loved to work and was dedicated to his job at Brock Enterprises where he was employed over 20 years. His family credited Bill’s significant introspection and personal awareness to the nightly “water therapy” Bill did when he held the hose over the plants in the back yard (you could see him getting smarter by the minute). Plus, Bill had the good sense to marry his college sweetheart, Suzanne, and the even better sense to remain dedicated and loving to her for 46 years.
Let’s not forget his good heart was mentioned. While it wasn’t the strongest heart since his heart attack, it sure was the most loving. He loved to give hugs and make people smile. Joel, Bill’s youngest son, said (and this is a direct quote): “He had a great love for his family and loved Joel the best out of all his children.” Heather, his third child, spoke about the collage Bill had in his closet. When given a card, letter, or picture from his children or grandchildren, Bill would hang them next to the place for his wallet so he could see them every morning after he awoke and every night before he went to bed. Bill loved God, basketball, and crawfish too but we weren’t always sure in which order. He could eat a lot of crawdaddies and endlessly watch his eldest grandson Noah play basketball, but we are pretty sure God took top billing due to the years Bill spent working with the homeless and volunteering in the prisons. When asked what was important in her Poppy’s life, Bill’s granddaughter, Toby, said he had a special relationship with Jesus, Mary, and the Catholic church.
Somebody even said Bill had a great sense of style, and although everyone might not consider penny loafers, mock turtlenecks, and hospital scrubs as great style, we sure are glad his grandson Griffin does. Any lastly, Bill’s youngest grandchild, Cira said, “He lived a long time” and while compared to living only 5 years that probably is true, for the rest of us, it certainly was not anywhere close to long enough.
Bill was survived by his wife, Suzanne, who loves him more than anything in world, and his four children, Shawn, Scott, Heather, and Joel. Bill also had five grandchildren Noah, Griffin, Toby, Quinn, and Cira and two sons-in-law, Chad and Rodrigo. His brother’s Bobby and Brad are surviving members of his family.
