It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Amerik Richard Heemskerk, born in Cornwall, Ontario, to Abraham Heemskerk and Elizabeth (nee van Leeuwen) Heemskerk, both originally from Holland.
Richard lived a life marked by faith, service, athletic excellence, and devotion to family and community.
He graduated from the University of Waterloo with a degree in Kinesiology and went on to serve as Lab Manager at the Environmental Isotope Lab at the University of Waterloo, where he was respected for his dedication and professionalism.
A devoted member of First United Church for more than 45 years, he faithfully served in countless roles including choir member, board member, property chair, and participant on numerous church committees. His church community was an important part of his life and a reflection of his generous spirit and servant’s heart.
Known for his commitment to helping others, Richard was a lifetime blood donor who proudly reached the remarkable milestone of 200 blood donations. He also shared his passion for athletics as a high jump coach at the University of Waterloo.
As an athlete, he achieved elite status in high jump at just 18 years old in 1974 and was invited to the 1976 Olympic Trials. His personal best jump of 2.1 metres remained a point of pride throughout his life. During his high school years, he shone as a basketball star, earning the respect of teammates and opponents alike through his skill and sportsmanship.
Above all, he was a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and Opa. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Jana Heemskerk (nee Vales); his children, Kristy Adeniyi (Gbenga), Ben Heemskerk, and Maria Lowrick (Kurt); his sisters, Prijna Gingrich (Allen) and Anna Pfohl; and his brother-in-law, Petr Vales (Noma). He was a cherished uncle to Yvonne, Shane (Sarah), Micah (Karen), and Travis (Jan).
He was an especially proud Opa to Jaedyn, Aviya, Kallen, Avalon, and Elijana, and held a special place in his heart for grand-dogs Mayowa and Mylo as well.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place at First United Church, 16 William St. W., Waterloo, on Monday, May 18, 2026, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and again at the church on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m.
His legacy of faith, generosity, humility, and love will continue to live on through all who knew him.
